PICTURE
OF THE WEEK
November 17, 2003
Dan
spent October through December 2002 working at The Grove,
an outdoor mall in Los Angeles, California. He worked as a
stock clerk at Abercrombie and Fitch for a whopping $7.75
an hour. And found himself crying and bleeding on the inventory
room floor up to his neck in scrunch-folded distressed cargo
pants and denim jackets on an almost daily basis.
God,
I wish that last part was a joke.
He
had previously tried to get a job at the Gap and had almost
secured employment when he failed the third interview for
the job in the most miserable and embarrassing way possible.
The
manager looked Dan in the eye and asked, “Why the Gap?”
Wanting to know why Dan wished to be a part of the nation’s
#1 retail team.
At
a loss for words, but not stupid things to say, Dan replied,
“Because I’ve always wanted to work with a large
number of African American homosexuals.”
The
interview ended there and Dan was escorted off the premises
and into the food court by two security guards.
In
Dan’s defense, there were three men working the sales
floor who were more visibly gay than they were black. It was
the bandeau tops and body glitter that gave them away.
Sean
made this humorous training manual clip-art to mock the hopelessly
out of touch and unwittingly racist co-workers that Dan experienced
on a daily basis.
